According to most sources, wildlife population declined a heartbreaking 73% between 1970-2020 across more than 5,000 vertebrae species.

Universally (with probably few exceptions) we are born with a fascination for other extraordinary beings.

Kids find exceptional joy and wonder in animals, birds, fish, insects, even. If you’re a parent, you know this. If you’re an aunt or uncle you might have noticed. You might even recall your own wonder from when you were a kid.

The discovery that other beings live on our planet is one of our primary excitements at a young age. Even as adults, wildlife fuels our sense of awe and marvel. It’s one of life’s greatest gifts — to have the company of other species in our habitat.

My girl gets upset whenever she hears about some species being at risk of extinction — and that list is long. My heart breaks. She asks me why.
